HOLLAND & BARRETT has the widest range of natural products on the market with a total of 2500 products al focused on health, Mr Jarrod Kayton, Operations Manager for Holland & Barrett in South Africa, said on Saturday with the opening of the new Holland & Barrrett FamilyCare branch in Oudtshoorn. Holland & Barrett, which is 80 years old and started in the UK, has one thousand stores in Europe and the UK and also owns the De Tuinen stores in Holland, Natures Way stores in Ireland and GNC stores in the UK. The holding company is NBTY in the US which is the world's largest manufacturer of natural food and health products. Kayton says Holland & Barrett recently started and international franchising operation with South Africa being the first country in which it is rolled out. "The model for the new stores is designed as a co-branded business with the FamilyCare Pharmacy Group which has the slogan "We care for you and we care for the community". According to Kayton Family Care Pharmacies are revolutionising the pharmacy market in South Africa by returning to a consumer and customer obsessed community pharmacy. "They've recognised a gap in the SA market as far as health and wellness is concerned and partnered with Holland & Barrett to fill this gap," he said.

Durban’s new Westwood Mall in Westville will be the launch pad on Thursday 23 October ’08 for the establishment in South Africa of a nationwide chain of top end health food retail stores under the banner of one of the biggest and most prestigious international brands in the business – Holland & Barrett. The SA company behind the R200-million ground breaking venture, which sets a new high water mark in the health food retail market in SA, is a R2-billion-sales-a-year Amalgamated HealthCare, which will operate the Holland & Barrett health food stores under the umbrella of its pharmacy subsidiary, Amalgamated Pharmacy Group (APG). The Holland & Barrett stores will trade either as stand-alone outlets, or will be “twinned’ under the same roof, but separately positioned, within APG’s existing chain of close to 50 Family Care-branded pharmacies. “Established at a cost of close to R10-million, the first three Holland & Barrett stores in South Africa will open their doors in Westville, Queensburgh and Seaview in Durban on October 25 as the start of a phase one roll-out that will take the national store count to about 50 by the start of 2010, when the next development phase kicks in,” says Suhail Gani, chief executive of Amalgamated HealthCare. The R3,5-million Westville store, a stand-alone outlet, is located in the new Westwood Mall, while the Queensburgh and Seaview outlets are “twinned” with existing Family Care pharmacies. Why launch in Durban? “Westwood Mall was the catalyst,” says Gani. “Having managed to secure space in the upmarket centre for a flagship Holland & Barrett store, we were under pressure to tie in with the opening timetable of the development – so Westwood Mall became our priority. “The fact that the Queensburgh and Seaview pharmacies were perfectly geared at the same time for a ‘twin’ conversion led us to tackle all three projects concurrently – enabling us to secure a three-store Holland & Barrett footprint in Durban before turning our attention to the rest of the country,” says Gani. Holland & Barrett is one of the world’s largest brands in the manufacture and distribution of specialist natural health products. Based in the UK Midlands, the company owns and operates 1 000 premier-status health food retail stores, 930 of which trade in the UK and Ireland – where they are prominent on most city and town high streets. The other 70 are located in the Netherlands. Staffed by comprehensively trained consultants and advisers to assist customers to make informed choices, the local Holland & Barrett stores, says Gani, will offer the most extensive and affordable range of natural health foods and remedies – including preventive, complementary and alternative medicines – yet seen in South Africa. “Produced essentially from natural ingredients, the product range will be a mirror image of the more than 2 000 line items stocked in Holland & Barrett stores in the UK – including vitamins, minerals, nutritional food supplements, herbs and herbal remedies, diet aids, homeopathic remedies, aromatherapy, body-building and sports nutrition products. The offering will also encompass products suitable for vegetarians, vegans, (gluten-intolerant) coeliacs and diabetics – such as dried fruit, nuts, health bars and other seed and snack products - smoothies, herbal teas, gluten- and dairy-free foods (including bread)…..even natural toiletries and cosmetics,” says Gani. “The Holland & Barrett venture adds a welcome new dimension to our group operations – the core of which has traditionally been the manufacture and distribution of generic drugs - and it reinforces our already strong position as a holistic national provider to both the public and private sectors of a wide range of scheduled and non-scheduled medication and other healthcare products and services,” Gani concludes. Holland & Barrett is coming into SA on the back of explosive growth in demand in this country for natural health foods and associated products – not least among the steadily rising population of elderly consumers, who are spending more and more healthcare Rands on preventive, complementary and alternative medicines, dietary supplements, vitamins, minerals and other health products.
